PowerTap Hydrogen is the Best Technology to Make Hydrogen Fuel a Viable Alternative to Diesel
There’s no doubt about the benefit of hydrogen fuel movement for the transportation industry. With current technology, a Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle drives 300-400 miles on a single tank of gas, and it only takes 3 to 5 minutes to refill the tank. These vehicles emit zero emissions into the atmosphere except water.
Three major light-duty vehicle manufacturers are producing hydrogen-powered vehicles: the Hyundai Nexo, the Toyota Mirai, and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. While getting alternative energy vehicles into the hands of green-energy-conscious consumers is critical, even more benefits will be achieved from buses, heavy-duty trucks, and medium-duty trucks that will run on this fuel.
According to Keith Malone, spokesperson for the California Fuel Cell Partnership, “We are at a really interesting point right now. It’s no longer about proving the technology. It’s about bringing the technology to scale to drive down costs.”
Much of that technology involves producing hydrogen in a fashion that doesn’t create other harmful byproducts. The most “green” production method uses electrolysis of water, preferably with electricity obtained from sustainable methods such as solar panels or wind turbines.
The next part of that technology concerns the development of infrastructure, namely production and distribution facilities, that will support consumer and commercial vehicles requiring hydrogen fuel. In mid-2020, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that 43 hydrogen fuel stations were in operation in the United States–with all but one located in California.
The North American Council for Freight Efficiency outlined these factors for hydrogen success in trucking:
- Achieving economies of scale in hydrogen production facility size.
- Creating a demand for hydrogen fuel.
- Providing an adequate distribution network,
- Implementing efficient delivery technology to fuel stations,
- Designing safe and efficient storage units,
- Finding proof of long-term reliability,
- Having accessible and affordable electricity for production,
- Producing fuel cell battery units at a reasonable cost,
- Implementing widespread safety training for technicians, drivers, and emergency personnel, and
- Using green production methods such as water electrolysis.
Be at the forefront of the hydrogen fuel movement.
It’s simple and affordable for fuel station owners to be a part of this evolution. PowerTap Hydrogen self-contained units produce hydrogen fuel on-site using only city water, natural gas, and electricity–all in less than 1,000 square feet of space. Our technology uses green technology and eliminates the need to transport and store excess fuel. With PowerTap, you can produce the right amount of power to meet your consumers’ demands every day.
