Hydrogen fuel is gaining popularity
Hydrogen fuel is gaining popularity as a carbon-neutral solution to power commercial vehicles and passenger cars and trucks. In California, there are over 48 fueling stations available for consumers to choose from. However, getting hydrogen fuel to those stations consistently has been an issue, causing owners to worry about whether or not they can refill their tanks at their usual stations.
Many California hydrogen stations purchase their fuel from Air Products, which produces its fuel in Louisiana and Texas. When Hurrican Zeta took out the electrical supply to one of their most prominent hydrogen supply facilities on October 28, 2020, drivers as far as the Bay Area was stuck without fuel. This wasn’t their first experience with shortages, though.
In 2019, California’s hydrogen fuel supply was disrupted for several months between June and September, again related to issues with Air Products. A significant uncontrolled release of high-pressure hydrogen occurred at an Air Products hydrogen trailer transfer facility on June 1, 2019, in Santa Clara, California, during a fill process. Operational errors led to a hydrogen-air mixture explosion that created a high-pressure gas jet fire.
This uncertainty regarding the availability of fuel at any given time is hindering the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. If consumers had more choices and could reasonably rely on fueling up wherever and whenever needed, this clean energy solution would be attractive to more drivers on the road. In an April 4, 2021 article published by Car and Driver, Jack Brouer (a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and associate director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine) remarked, “…if there were a hydrogen station on the corner, it could substantially reduce area electrical consumption and the need to update electrical infrastructure dramatically.” The opportunity is wide open for businesses that deliver products consistently.
Never Run Out of Hydrogen Fuel for Your Customers Your business can be part of the solution.
California is moving forward rapidly to promote many forms of clean energy via laws and incentives for hydrogen fuel suppliers and consumers alike.
